Earlier this month, we started our exploration of outdoor living options by taking a look at some of the trends in decks, patios, and porches. <\/strong>(Read Exploring Outdoor Living Options \u2013 Part 1<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we continue discussing Outdoor Living Options of decks and screened porches by sharing a client\u2019s story.  This award-winning project in Canton started because the homeowners wanted to replace their existing deck with a new outdoor living space that would take advantage of the beautiful views. To meet those needs, Atlanta Design & Build created an elegant yet rustic outdoor space, protected from bugs, and a new deck for an eating area.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>One of the challenges to the project was we have very large windows that overlook a beautiful wooded area,\u201d <\/em> says homeowner V Lanier. \u201cI did not want a screened-in porch to invade on my view from the living room \u2026 it was really important to us that we keep a very open feel to the back of the house.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atlanta Design & Build accomplished that goal by using large screen panels that let in the fresh air while also keeping the view unblocked. We even screened the peak of the roof to allow heat to escape during the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important feature for Lanier was a fireplace, so they could use the space throughout the year. Positioning the fireplace and a solid wall along the north side of the space helped to accomplish that by shielding the area from north winds in the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>It was really meant to be a space that could be tied to the outdoors,\u201d<\/em> Lanier says. \u201cIt\u2019s totally a space for serenity and peace \u2026 and it\u2019s wonderful to have fires out there in the winter and just to entertain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final design has plenty of natural cedar on the walls, a look Lanier wanted to replicate from her travels in the Western United States. While the plan originally called for cedar for the floor as well, she made the decision to opt for the reduced maintenance of Trex composite decking after consulting with Atlanta Design & Build.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s not just a deck anymore,\u201d<\/em> Lanier says. \u201cIt\u2019s another room on the back of our house.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new composite deck attached to the screened porch, with stairs down to the yard, has also helped the home blend with the outdoors. The previous deck had no access to the yard, functioning more as a balcony, and limiting its value as an outdoor space. The new deck now sits outside the breakfast room, with one section of the existing triple window replaced with a custom-sized door for easy access to the new eating area and yard below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>We essentially added two new living spaces that will be low maintenance for years to come.\u201d  <\/em>Lanier adds that the new additions have improved the value of the home and made the space more usable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s been really nice to sit out there on pretty mornings and have breakfast or \u2026 sit and take in the outdoors,\u201d <\/em>she says. \u201cIt really allows us to just enjoy the peace and sounds of nature all the time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lanier originally chose Atlanta Design & Build because the company was willing to accept her suggestions and amend the project throughout construction. The team lived up to her expectations, working with her to make the best design choices to create their dream space, Lanier says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>They were really top notch,\u201d <\/em>she says. \u201cThe team really took a lot of care.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
