You\u2019re ready to build that kitchen, bathroom or addition you\u2019ve been dreaming of for years. You know which appliances will match your d\u00e9cor, the shower you want, and the finishes that will bring it all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\u2019re excited to get that dream project. But maybe you\u2019re just a little scared, too. We\u2019ve all heard the horror stories about remodeling projects that end in disaster and you don\u2019t want that to happen to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here are 7 tips to prepare for and survive your remodeling project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Hire a qualified, professional remodeler<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
This is the most important part of your remodeling project. Nothing matters more than having the right partner for your remodel. Those new windows or cabinets won\u2019t matter if they\u2019re not installed correctly. A qualified remodeler will help you make the best choices for your space, get ready for your remodel and remove as much of the pain as possible from the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Have architectural plans completed and decisions made<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
To ensure your project is ready to get started, it\u2019s important to have major decisions made, along with detailed architectural drawings. Some remodelers work off incomplete plans or sketches \u2013 that just leads to problems as the project progresses. Plans should include precise measurements, product information and specific design choices. Without that, it will be difficult to determine exact costs, or a timeline for your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Prepare a temporary kitchen and eating area<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
If your project involves a large kitchen, you\u2019re probably going to lose access to your kitchen for weeks or months. Find an area in your house that can be set up as a temporary space for preparing meals. At minimum, that probably means a small refrigerator, a water source, a microwave, and other small appliances. You\u2019ll also want a table or temporary countertop that can serve as a meal prep area. If you eat most of your meals in the kitchen, think about where you\u2019ll eat during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s also a good time to grill out. Along those same lines, save yourself some stress by buying disposable plates, cutlery and cups to use for at least some meals. Add some money to the budget for takeout meals, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Pack up and simplify<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Ahead of the remodel, you\u2019ll want to pack up any easily damaged items in the spaces being renovated, such as good dishes, family heirlooms, or electronics. Remove furniture, pictures and other breakable items of personal value adjacent to rooms and walls of affected areas both above and below. It\u2019s also a good opportunity to simplify your life by donating any items you don\u2019t use anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. Figure out a storage solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Where are you going to put all that stuff you packed up? Know ahead of the project where you want to keep everything. If you have space in a basement or unused room, great. If you rent temporary storage, be sure to keep the items you need to regularly access where they can be easily retrieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. Prepare your pets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Cats and dogs don\u2019t like change. If they normally eat or sleep in the area being remodeled, move their gear to another part of the house several days before the project starts to get them used to the change (including the litter box for cats). It\u2019s the homeowners\u2019 responsibility to care for their beloved pets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
7. Breathe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Remember to relax and accept that there will be some disruption to your life. But also remember that when you\u2019re done, you\u2019re going to have a beautiful new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
