Adding a master suite on the main floor, often with universal design elements, is one of the best ways to make your home more livable now and in the future.
As a NARI Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP), Atlanta Design & Build President, Dale Contant, has received extensive training in planning and constructing universal design projects and brings that expertise to all of our clients’ projects.
Earlier this month, we talked about some of the important factors when considering a new master suite addition, or renovation. In this post, we want to share the story of how a great new master suite improved the home of one of our past clients.
This Marietta home was too small for the needs of the homeowners. They were looking for a new master bedroom, more room in the garage and an improvement to the way they live with more usable space. They also wanted to ensure that their new home would be livable for them for years to come. The Atlanta Design & Build team worked with the homeowners to create a project that delivered everything for which they were hoping.
The home was on a large lot, which made it possible to nearly double the size of the home and reshape the exterior, boosting its curb appeal. The Atlanta Design & Build design team worked hard to make sure this large addition didn’t dwarf the existing home. The new space blends seamlessly with the previous home, and the rest of the property. The two-floor addition included a master suite on the main level, with a large garage and workshop below the previous ground level. Extensive excavation was required to create the new garage, front walkway and driveway. To the rear of the home, a new Georgia Room was added to enhance the owners’ enjoyment of their outdoor space.
A master suite retreat
The new master suite is connected to the main living area of the home, but offers privacy not previously available. This master suite makes up the entire second floor of the new addition.
It includes a spacious new bathroom, with double-sink vanity, a frameless glass shower with built-in bench, and a large whirlpool tub. The vaulted ceilings in the bedroom add to the open feel of the space. Hardwood floors and traditional finishes give the room a comfortable feel, while a large, well-lit walk-in closet offers expansive practical storage space. The bedroom suite has great backyard views and accesses the new rear deck.
We further enriched the outdoor living features of the home with a new sunroom, replacing the existing worn out concrete patio. The homeowners came into the project with the idea of building a screened porch, but after discussing their needs with the Atlanta Design & Build team, they opted for one of our Georgia Rooms. This gives them year-round use of the space, blending the indoors with the outdoors, and the homeowners are thrilled with the change. (Read more about our Georgia Rooms here.)
