Open Kitchen Remodel Designed for Entertaining

2016 NARI-Atlanta CotY Award Winner

The main living area of our clients’ 1990s home was divided by walls into segmented rooms for the kitchen, dining room and family room. This resulted in confined spaces that interrupted traffic flow when hosting get-togethers. Our clients came to Atlanta Design & Build expressing the desire for an open kitchen remodel that would enhance their entertainment of family and friends. They wanted their kitchen to be brighter and more welcoming. They also felt the need for increased storage, including the creation of a large “to-die-for” walk-in pantry in the space taken by the laundry room, which they wanted to relocate upstairs.

The ADB team designed a new open floor plan that perfectly met our clients’ needs and desires for their kitchen, and it impacted their other living spaces as well.

The plan involved the removal of a primary load-bearing wall expanding from the front exterior wall to the back exterior wall of the home. Both an 18-foot steel beam and a 10-foot LVL beam were placed into the ceiling to support the load. Also removing the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, created the free-flowing expansive openness desired. See the before and after floor plans here.

The spacious new kitchen has now been completely opened up to the dining room and family room, with no barriers between them. The one large open space with improved traffic flow offers ample area for work, eating and entertaining. Removal of the walls has brought more natural light into the kitchen from both sides. A single narrow wall was purposely maintained in just the right location to furnish beam support and privacy to the powder room—removing it from the sight-line of the kitchen.

Many functional enhancements make this kitchen a cook’s dream come true.

This includes all new Bosch appliances, the microwave drawer in the island, and superior cabinet craftsmanship. Innovative storage solutions in the kitchen include drawer storage for pots and pans, pull-out trash cans, pull-out shelves, storage drawers, spice rack pull-outs, and tray storage. A gorgeous 9 foot-3 inch by 5 foot single slab of Colonial Gold granite presides over the island. This large island countertop provides workspace for multiple cooks, while also providing an eating area for 4-5 people, buffet set-up or gathering space while entertaining. The custom designed island cabinetry was created with furniture-style architectural elements for a seamless transition with the living spaces. “The kitchen island is my favorite aspect of the finished project!” says our satisfied client. View more photos of this beautiful project here.

Once our clients’ laundry room was moved upstairs, a large 7 foot-7 inch by 9 foot-6 inch walk-in pantry was built in the remaining space. The pantry contributes ample storage, while its trendy sliding barn-style door saves space and is easily maneuvered hands free. A handy “drop zone” was created in the garage foyer directly across from the garage entry and next to the walk-in pantry. Inside the kitchen leading to the family room, an attractive built-in wine/coffee bar not only serves refreshments, but stores appliances, glassware and other supplies. LED under-cabinet lights provide task lighting for the countertop work stations, while LED tape lighting maximizes the functionality of the glass shelving. Recessed lights, pendant lights and surface mounted fixtures illuminate the entire kitchen space.

The aesthetic enhancements make this open kitchen remodel exceptionally inviting.

Continuity of color is achieved throughout the space, mixing the soft neutrals of the paint, backsplash tile and soft-white cabinets with the visual impact of the contrasting dark stained island cabinetry, granite countertops and stained oak flooring. The elegant backsplash is of White Carrara marble. Consistent use of stainless steel in the chimney hood exhaust, appliances, sink and plumbing fixtures is also complemented by the sleek cabinet hardware. The white cabinets include simple Shaker doors for a Transitional look. Tall cabinets anchor the placement of the refrigerator and double ovens on opposite sides of the cooktop, rendering design balance. Repetition of the cabinetry backsplash, countertop and crown molding above the cabinets of the wine/coffee bar, kitchen cabinets and the drop zone unites the entire space.

“Atlanta Design & Build was very easy to work with and listened to what I wanted. I wanted a more open floor plan. They addressed this PERFECTLY! We are very happy with the remodel. It’s hard to remember what the house looked like before,” exclaims L. Whalley, Marietta.
