Outdoor Living Space Enhances a Backyard View in Canton

2017 CotY Award-Winning Project

One of the delights of living in the Cherokee County area is the opportunity homeowners have of enjoying magnificent outdoor scenery right in their own backyards. For years our clients had been enjoying the surrounding panorama of many towering trees from their simple uncovered wooden deck. Now they were dreaming of a screened porch that would provide them with the same gorgeous views, but protect them from wind, rain and insects.

“I have always wanted a screened porch. The porch allows us to enjoy the view in shade and comfort. We are very happy with the end result!”

The Atlanta Design & Build team worked with these homeowners to transform their existing open deck into a delightful screened porch with tall, expansive windows. In addition to the tremendous scenery, one of the main focal points of the space is the gorgeous fireplace. Constructed of fieldstone veneer with stone slabs for the mantle and hearth, the fireplace gives the porch a rustic vibe. The stained white pine vaulted ceiling and gray pickled shiplap wall covering above the mantle reinforce that look. Natural rough cut post and beam cedar, along with matte black balusters, continues the rustic feel of the space. The sun-beaten wooden boards from the original deck were replaced with Trex composite boards that offer the realistic look of wood along with valuable low-maintenance.

With a flat screen TV installed above the mantle and an inviting fireplace below, this is definitely an outdoor living space where the homeowners can spend many warm cozy hours, regardless of the weather. Recessed lights and wall sconces allow the family to entertain late into the evening hours.

“We essentially added two new living spaces that will be low maintenance for years to come.”

As beautiful as their backyard is, our clients’ original deck was a balcony with no stairway down to the lower level. The only way the homeowners could actually get to the backyard was through their basement. The Atlanta Design & Build team constructed a new open deck with a stairway descending to the backyard and connected the deck seamlessly to the screened porch. Rich cedar posts and railings, along with matte black balusters, blend the new deck and stairway perfectly with the screened porch. The deck offers an eating area adjacent to the interior breakfast room, as well as easy access to the backyard for the family and their pets to enjoy the outdoor grounds.

“I enjoyed working with the team at Atlanta Design & Build. The Project Manager listened to my wishes and presented options for us to make decisions within our budget. We appreciated that once the project began, they stayed with it until completed. The job was finished within the timeline that was promised.”
