Roswell Sunroom Addition for Entertaining

NARI-Atlanta CotY Award Winner

Like most homeowners today, our clients love to entertain family and friends in their home. But, their small cozy den didn’t provide enough space to gather for special occasions. Extending their living space with a new Sunroom Addition was their desire, which involved the removal of the den’s exterior wall and their existing deck.

We are thrilled to have received a 2016 NARI-Atlanta Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award for this project in the category of Residential Addition Under $100,000. This award was given by NARI Atlanta, the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Read about our other NARI-Atlanta CotY Award winners here.

Before

Removing the exterior wall required installing an engineer-approved 600lb. steel I-beam to span the opening and support the second story. The work progressed very carefully during the wall removal and beam installation, since it was taking place directly beneath a recently renovated upstairs master bath. Absolutely no movement of the upstairs level could be allowed in order to prevent damage to the master bath tile and the second floor. Our team accomplished this flawlessly.

Due to ample new windows and a French door to their new deck, natural light floods the sunroom and also brightens the den. Natural oak hardwood flooring installed in the sunroom ties into the existing flooring, creating continuity with the rest of the home.

Raise the Roof | A Whole House Remodel Pt 4

We have been hard at work on this 1960’s split-level home transformation we’re calling “Raise the Roof”. Throughout this project we have given some glimpses into the extensive remodeling work happening. Our client’s project includes an updated kitchen, new entry way, a screened porch addition and an open floorplan concept for their family room with a higher vaulted ceiling. They needed us to raise the roof which is JUST what we did…LITERALLY!!

Project Manager Sydney Contant, along with the rest of our team, pays close attention to every detail of our clients’ projects. She recently took a few in-progress photos for documentation and we thought it would be fun to share them with you. These are images not many people get to see outside of the ADB team and the family whose home we are working on. Enjoy this unique behind-the-scenes look at what makes us Atlanta Design & Build. You will especially like referring to the earlier photos and videos we’ve shared of this project to see the difference being made! Look for clickable links below for an easy path to comparing the early photos with the more recent ones.

Above is a view of the new front porch. Be sure to watch our time-lapse video of the roof being installed. The new brown front door looks so inviting!

These next four photos show the screen porch addition and the installation of stonework around the fireplace in the porch area.

Click on these photos to get a closer look and also visit the Raise the Roof Part 2 blog post for a full view of the screen porch being built.

Finally, we head inside to see the open floorplan of the kitchen and family room. The kitchen cabinets offer wonderful storage solutions for this family. You HAVE to compare the before photos of the kitchen and family room from Raise the Roof Part 2 with these! It’s incredible to see these spaces come together, one of our favorite parts of every remodeling project.

Look at the details: See the vaulted ceiling and the beautiful flooring? Do you remember seeing the video featuring the drywall ceiling and wood flooring installation? Watch it now for a refresher and be amazed! Also, notice that gorgeous barn door in the family room. This leads to the basement where we improved the staircase that leads to the newly updated laundry room space.

Our excited homeowners are anticipating the move back in to their remodeled home. Once they have settled in, we will have the final photos taken to show the full beauty of this project and the ways that it is improving the lives of our clients.

Atlanta Design & Build Wins Three NARI-Atlanta CotY Awards

Our Atlanta Design & Build team is thrilled to have received three 2016 Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards given by NARI Atlanta, the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. The awards were presented at the Annual Awards Banquet and Gala held December 13 at the King Plow Arts Center in Atlanta.

The CotY Award is the preeminent award presented each year by NARI Atlanta to its members for outstanding work of the highest quality. We feel extremely honored that our ADB team and these three projects have received such recognition. We also want to thank our wonderful clients for allowing us the privilege of working on their projects.

The NARI CotY projects are divided into 23 different entry categories; ranging from residential entire house, kitchen, bath and other interior renovation projects to residential outdoor and exterior renovation projects to commercial projects. A panel of NARI professionals from a Florida chapter completed the judging using specific design and craftsmanship judging criteria.

We are proud to have won in the categories of Residential Addition: $100,001 – $250,000; Residential Kitchen: $100,001 – $150,000 with team entrant The Counterpoint Group; and Residential Addition: Under $100,000!

Raise the Roof | A Whole House Remodel Pt 3

We’re giving you a peek at some of the interior remodeling work we’ve completed on our clients’ 1960s split-level home. Silent film style!

These are views not many people get to see outside of the ADB team and the family whose home we are working on. Enjoy this unique behind-the-scenes look at what makes us Atlanta Design & Build. Watch the time-lapse video to see our team and business partners:

1. Perform an amazing balancing act on stilts! As our team is taping and mudding the ceiling after drywall installation, stilts make the job much easier.

2. Install a beautiful wood floor. Our partners at InsiDesign are installing high-quality random length Hickory wood flooring.

3. Brick up a window opening. The kitchen cabinet design required the removal of a window.  Here the brick masons are installing the brick on the Sunroom side of the wall, which will then be painted to seamlessly match the rest of the room.

Celebrating 1 ½ Years with Bill Brown

Continuing our 20th Anniversary celebration, Atlanta Design & Build honors the great skills of our Lead Carpenter, Bill Brown, who has been a part of our team since July 28, 2015.

Bill grew up in Rhode Island and studied at Toll Gate Vocational-Technical school there. An ambitious young man, Bill was cutting lawns for extra money after school when one of his customers offered him a job with his construction company. After he graduated, at age 17, Bill took on a job as a beginning laborer with another construction firm. His initial tasks involved carrying wood around and picking up items for other guys as he learned how to frame houses. Early on, the company he worked for was building custom homes and then switched to remodeling after the market crashed in the 1980s.

In 2003, at 34 years old, Bill moved to New Hampshire where he began working again for a company that built custom homes. He did the framing, roofing, window and door installations, and exterior trim on $12-18 million homes.

dec16-billcoupleAfter several years in New Hampshire, Bill decided to move to a warmer climate because he disliked the cold weather he was experiencing on the job. He and his wife relocated to Atlanta where Bill signed up with a temp agency. As a self-proclaimed workaholic, Bill was nervous about moving to a new city without a job already in his pocket. The agency got him into contact with Atlanta Design & Build in July of 2015, and he’s been with us ever since. “I’m absolutely loving the weather,” exclaims Bill. “I get to work outside in a T-shirt from early spring through late fall!”

Working as Lead Carpenter with Atlanta Design & Build

As a Lead Carpenter, Bill does a little bit of everything, including siding, framing, roofing, sheet rock, tile work, and finished carpentry on the exterior and interior. Typically, the ADB team performs demolition and build out of necessary framing. They then manage the plumbing, HVAC specialists, electricians and the trades required. ADB professionally completes the project. “We’re hands-on through the entire project,” says Bill.

Celebrating 1 ½ Years with Nancy Pergrim

Atlanta Design & Build continues celebrating our 20th Anniversary by highlighting the incredible skills of our bookkeeper, Nancy Pergrim. She has been a tremendous asset to our clients and to us since joining our team in 2015.

Nancy has lived in Cobb County most all of her life and loves it here. As a youngster, Nancy was a well-rounded student, and always had an affinity for math. Numbers were her forte, so it comes as no surprise that her original career was in banking. After more than twenty-five years she moved to bookkeeping, using her banking background to give her additional insight to the financial end of business.

Nancy’s husband, Randy, is a subcontractor installing cabinetry for local remodeling companies. Through a chance meeting with the owner of one of those companies, Nancy’s movement to bookkeeping began. Initially she helped the company by doing some data entry in the evening after work. The business owner confided to Nancy that he just couldn’t keep up with the bookkeeping himself, and wanted to hire someone honest and dependable. “He was very persuasive,” says Nancy. “He kept telling me I was the perfect person for the job.” Nancy felt unsure because for twenty-five years she had been programmed for banking, which uses a different system of financial record keeping. However, he had a CPA degree and insisted he wasn’t worried.

After eight years with that company, Nancy learned that Dale Contant of Atlanta Design & Build was looking for a bookkeeper. Nancy had heard of ADB because our company is well-known throughout the local remodeling industry and is a competitor of the company she worked for. Nancy was also aware of Dale’s reputation for doing the right thing by his clients and employees. She wasn’t unhappy in her position, it was just that the company she worked for wasn’t large enough to offer benefits that she needed.

Nancy begins working with Atlanta Design & Build
