In December, we were honored to receive a 2017 NARI-Atlanta Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award in the Residential Interior Over $150k category. This amazing project, affectionately referred to as “Raise the Roof” in our Atlanta Design & Build blogs last year, has given us yet another reason to be proud! Read through this story’s progress for before, in-progress, and behind the scenes looks.

As you may remember, our clients’ 1960s split-level home in Chamblee was outdated in appearance and in its functionality for the family. The main level consisted of four small, compartmentalized rooms with numerous doorways and walls that caused congestion points and prevented family togetherness. The tiny kitchen provided only minimal workspace or storage. By raising the roof and removing interior walls, we created an open floor plan with an impressive vaulted ceiling.

The updated space features an incredibly beautiful kitchen offering optimal organization in its perimeter and island cabinets. The kitchen, dining room and TV area now flow together seamlessly. The large open area accommodates family gatherings and entertaining through three distinct functional areas, each designated by a stylish and purposeful element.

In addition to the award-winning interior, Atlanta Design & Build transformed our clients’ back porch into an outdoor living space. We enlarged and screened their existing porch and added a stone fireplace that allows them to enjoy relaxing on the porch almost all year long!

We are grateful to our clients for giving us the opportunity to design and build this marvelous space, which culminated in our team receiving this CotY award! Welcome to Miguel Solis to the Atlanta Design & Build Team

The ADB Team

We are pleased to introduce the newest member of our Atlanta Design & Build team, Miguel Solis. Miguel joined us in January 2017 and is highly experienced in the construction industry. Originally from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Miguel now makes his home in Decatur. “Georgia is a great place to live. I love it here!” exclaimed Miguel.

While a young man living in the Virgin Islands, Miguel attended vocational school and then in 1977 he became a member of the U.S. Army National Guard for 11 years. He was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, MO where he was trained as a construction utility worker. During this time he completed a wide variety of construction projects.

In 1988, Miguel resigned from the Army National Guard and returned to the Virgin Islands. At first he worked with local contractors who were building houses. Later he did construction utility work at an oil refinery for two years. “That place was at one time the second largest oil refinery in the United States,” noted Miguel. “But unfortunately the business slowed down and all the workers were laid off.” Today the refinery is officially closed.

Miguel decided to move to Miami, Florida, where he ended up living from 2002-2015. Some friends in Decatur requested he come and work for them so he moved to GA. Eventually, that business also slowed down. Miguel sent out resumes to see what work positions might be available that fit his expertise. He was excited when Express Employment Professionals recommended an opening with Atlanta Design & Build and arranged an interview.

Miguel Joins the Atlanta Design & Build Team as a Carpenter

“During the interview, the Atlanta Design & Build staff was exceptional,” states Miguel. “They explained very clearly their expectations, and everything sounded highly professional. As they explained all the details to me, I realized their company attitude is one of encouragement, whether you are their clients or team members. ADB is made up of very good people to work for and they are respectful of everyone.”

Miguel works as a Carpenter for our ADB team. His specialties are framing, building decks and screened porches, plus tiling in bathrooms and kitchens. ADB provided Miguel with his very first screened porch project. “It was a challenge to me since it was vital that I get the screening nice and tight without any wrinkles,” Miguel remarked. “But now that I’m experienced with screened porches, the process is a breeze.”

He also mentions that his work responsibilities involve job safety, watching out for his co-workers, being careful of his surroundings, and protecting clients’ property. Believe it or not, some of the remodeling work he really enjoys is demolition, cleaning up debris, and preparing the job site for reconstruction. “ADB knows I’m capable and handy,” said Miguel. “I may not be the fastest worker, but I always work hard to get the job completed to the best of my ability and to their satisfaction—which is very important.”

Outside of work, Miguel’s favorite activities are getting together with family and friends at home for a barbecue cookout, watching sports on television, and playing dominos. Playing dominos has gotten to be a very popular game with his family, and they play every weekend. He also enjoys going fishing whenever he gets a chance, and he absolutely loves the beach!  “I just like to relax and enjoy being with my family.”

Atlanta Design & Build Gets to Know Timbertown Even Better

Our Atlanta Design & Build team recently had the pleasure of visiting the Overseas Hardwood Company (OHC), the parent company of Timbertown, one of our building material partners. Team members traveled to Mobile, Alabama during the first week of August where we were treated to a tour of the OHC plant facilities and a day of fishing on Dauphin Bay! The team really enjoyed getting to know the OHC and Timbertown crew members during these fast-paced, but very rewarding couple of days. Our sincere thanks to Luckett Robinson and his brother Gregory, owners of OHC. They were wonderful hosts and fabulous chefs! We hope you enjoy clicking through the pictures of our trip below.

MAGIC Camp Builds Confidence at Gwinnett Tech

Once again this summer, Atlanta Design & Build (ADB) sponsored Project Manager Sydney Contant-Nunes as a keynote speaker and hands-on instructor for Gwinnett Technical College’s MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl in Construction) Camp. The program, established by contractor Renee Conner in 2007, has now expanded to four different locations in Georgia. It is a free, one-week day camp designed to introduce high school girls to exciting careers in construction.

Three years ago, Kathleen Torrance, who is a Lab Assistant in Residential Construction and Carpentry at Gwinnett Technical College, contacted the NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) Atlanta office. She spoke to Executive Director Jesse Morado, who then called H. Dale Contant of ADB to ask if Sydney would be interested in getting involved in MAGIC Camp. “Sydney was willing from the very beginning,” Kathleen stated. “She had the courage to come out of her comfort zone to help.”

Each of the five days of camp is focused on a different construction specialty, so the girls get a broad exposure to the industry. Monday is OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) training day that helps the girls develop a safety-first attitude. Tuesday is carpentry day. Wednesday is electrical day where they learn to do basic wiring. Thursday is split into morning and afternoon sessions with emphases on welding and using heavy equipment. Friday the girls tour an active construction job site. Friday there is also a banquet for students and parents, during which time the girls’ projects are displayed and a highly regarded industry professional is the speaker.

Sydney’s role in past years has been as keynote speaker on carpentry day. It can be a tough challenge to walk into a classroom and face a group of high school girls who have not yet become cohesive, since it is only their second day of camp. This summer, however, Kathleen asked if Sydney could also be one of those who is responsible to instruct the girls in the carpentry lab before the lecture, and she agreed. “It was a wonderful time,” Kathleen exclaimed. “Sydney is very experienced, comfortable with tools, so encouraging, and sets the girls at ease. They loved her in the lab, and afterwards they were glad to listen to her talk. Although they were polite, they asked so many questions that she could barely make it through her presentation!”
